The Sony Xperia 5 was launched in September 2019, coming in as a compact version of its Xperia 1 flagship. The Xperia 1 II has arrived in February 2020, and so now, it is time for Sony to launch a compact version again. Right on schedule, Sony has now unveiled the Xperia 5 II (read as “Xperia 5 Mark 2″), with a 6.1” 120Hz OLED display, Snapdragon 865, and more.

The Sony Xperia 5 II is the spiritual successor of the Compact series from Sony, carrying forward the legacy of packing in beefy internals in ergonomically pleasant dimensions. Smartphones these days have grown unwieldily huge and heavy, so a smaller smartphone (even if it still may be larger than previous Compact smartphones) is a welcome breath of fresh air. You get Gorilla Glass 6 on both, the front and back of the device. You also get front-facing stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, which does make it a good device for media consumption if you prefer a smaller device. You also get a good 120Hz refresh rate OLED display, along with a 240Hz touch response rate.
Sony’s press release leaves out a fair few details. Sony, officially, only mentions that the Xperia 5 II comes with a triple camera setup with 16mm/24mm/70mm focal lengths. Beyond this, we presume (based on leaked promo materials) that the camera setup is the same as the Xperia 1 II, i.e you may be getting a 12MP f/1.7 primary camera, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera. Sony is highlighting the ability to shoot 4K HDR videos @ 120fps and then have them play at 24fps for 5x slow motion. And of course, you also get the Photography Pro mode that features several manual controls such as ISO, shutter speed, EV indicator, as well as the ability to capture in RAW and support noise reduction. The front camera is also not detailed, so we presume the same 8MP shooter from the Xperia 1 II.
Curiously, Sony also does not talk about 5G on the Xperia 5 II, only mentioning that 5G availability will depend on the market and operator.
Pricing and Availability
The Sony Xperia 5 II will be available unlocked in Black color (though a Gray color variant was also spotted in leaks) in the USA, and the device will be compatible with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Cricket. Pre-orders start at $950 on September 29, 2020, with shipments starting from December 4, 2020. If you pre-order by November 29, 2020, you will also receive a gaming bundle comprising of a gaming headset, a 10,000 mAh power bank, and 21,600 Call of Duty Mobile Points; totaling over $400 in value.
Sony has not shared information about other markets. We will update the article when we get more information.
